Dressmaker Fabrics Guide

Quick answer

Choose fabric after the customer brief and silhouette. Keep the grain direction visible, compare the final fabric-pattern result, and leave room in the budget for required finishing.

Fabric is more than a color choice. Dressmaker models grain direction, material appearance and cost, while the selected pattern changes how a fabric contributes to the final outfit.

A reliable selection order

  1. Confirm the customer's requested mood and occasion.
  2. Pick the broad silhouette and required pattern pieces.
  3. Compare fabric appearance and cost in that context.
  4. Check the resulting style information before cutting.
  5. Reserve budget for any required trim or accessories.

Grain line matters

Pattern pieces should follow the fabric grain unless the design specifically calls for a bias cut. Poor alignment changes how the finished panel behaves and can reduce construction quality.
