Dressmaker Sewing Guide

This sewing guide is based on the public Dressmaker prototype. The full Steam release may adjust tools, scoring and feedback, so final values should be retested after launch.

Before the sewing machine

Sewing quality depends on earlier choices. Check that every pattern piece is present, the fabric grain is aligned and the cut follows the pattern edge before you move to the sewing machine.

Stitching basics

Follow the seam guide with steady movement. Straight seams reward consistency, while corners and curves need slower control. If a stitch line begins to drift, correct it early instead of forcing the rest of the seam to follow the mistake.

Pattern placement

Pattern placement affects the whole garment. Keep grain arrows aligned with the fabric grain unless a specific design calls for another direction, and leave enough space around each piece before cutting.

Common mistakes

• Cutting before every required piece is placed.
• Ignoring the grain direction.
• Rushing curves at the sewing machine.
• Spending the full budget before required finishing.
• Adding decoration before confirming the dress structure fits the customer request.
